Not everyone receives a patriarchal blessing when they are young. Patriarchal blessings also help prepare us for challenges that can come later in life. "I clung to this promise during the weeks before my surgery. I read my patriarchal blessing over and over. Every time I felt worry try to take a hold, I remembered the promise of health that I had received. I would get through this. I would be all right. The Lord always keeps His word."

There are many common questions surrounding patriarchal blessings: Why should I get one? What will it say? Why does my lineage matter? With whom can I share it? How should I prepare? In this episode, professor Brad Wilcox shares insights to these questions and more from his research and publication on patriarchal blessings.
Are most members of the Church literal descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, or are they Gentiles who have been adopted into the house of Israel?The question is raised hundreds of times each year throughout the Church: Are Church members literal descendants of Israel, as most patriarchal blessings state? Or are we Gentiles and belong to the house of Israel only by adoption?
Declarations of lineage in patriarchal blessings have, since the earliest days of the Restoration, evolved in terms of frequency of inclusion, which tribal lineages predominate, and understanding of the meaning of the declaration. Andersen argues for a non-literal understanding consistent with scripture and science, but posits that these declarations have deep and important significance in connection with the gathering of Israel.
